Most Deserved Knockout Bonus: The Superman Punch of '08

Light Heavyweight, James Irvin (AKA: The Sandman) tied the UFC record for the quickest knockout ever, earlier on this year. It took all of 8 seconds for him to take out his heavy handed opponent, Houston Alexander. A bonus of $20,000 was awarded to Irvin for delivering not only the quickest, but also one of the most fashionable knockouts ever. Fights like this are why Mixed Martial Arts is the fastest evolving sport. It was the Superman punch that did it.

Superman Punch - A traditional Muay Thai move in which the fighter fakes a kick to the leg and leaps forward with a punch.

Knowing little about MMA, even I can realize how this event could have a huge impact on the image of the industry. Taking out your opponent within seconds of the fight is respectable. What I like about MMA is the spontaneity of the sport. I never realized how complex the sport actually is; and I can respect it more now that I know that. Because of the complexity of the sport, I believe it is more interesting to watch. I can also see how viewers may be turned off by complexity. Just like football, when the viewer doesn't know much about what is going on, it can be a challenge to market to them; so in that sense, I see how the sport is still evolving and trying to build awareness.

This sport continues to grow to new heights, and events like this are why. It's not like there are 2 no name fighters competing, instead its a good fight, and just the sheer edge that one fighter has leads to a victory. This is great for marketing, who wouldnt want to watch a fight that has an underlying bet to it?!
